"(W)hatever expectations (Russian President Vladimir) Putin might have had for a good relationship with (U.S. President Donald) Trump, it was always going to come second to his maximalist goals in Ukraine. For Putin, the invasion of Ukraine is existential," a former high-ranking Kremlin official said.
ANALYSIS - The U.S. president had dreamed of a deal with Putin at the risk of sacrificing Ukraine's interests. After a 180-degree turn, he seems to resolve himself to the exercise of the balance of power.
The Kremlin does not want to talk to Trump about Ukraine. For Moscow, Trump's policy is particularly interesting in terms of disruption in the Western alliance.
According to Russian sources, Putin is not going to end the war anytime soon.
