Putin tells Fico: Russia will meet Slovakia's energy demand
Putin said Russia would satisfy Slovakia’s energy needs as the EU member continues buying Russian oil and gas through Soviet-era pipelines.
On May 9, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at the Kremlin, pledging, "We will do everything to satisfy Slovakia's needs in energy resources."
Slovakia remains one of the few countries in Europe still purchasing Russian oil and gas, receiving supplies via the Soviet-built Druzhba and TurkStream pipelines.
Fico arrived in Moscow to mark the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, though he notably chose not to attend the Victory Parade on Red Square.
Slovakia maintains political ties with Russia while arguing that weaning its infrastructure off Russian energy supplies would prove too costly to implement.
