Putin Likely to Escalate Ukraine War, Sources Tell Reuters
Sources said Putin is set on taking the rest of Donbas and may broaden strikes after Ukraine’s drone attacks hit Russian energy sites, Reuters reported.
On Monday, President Donald Trump claimed President Vladimir Putin wants the war to end and that a resolution is "closer than people realize," contradicting Kremlin signals of continued military resolve.
Putin has "dug in his heels" to capture the remainder of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, with sources indicating he "needs some kind of victory" to justify the ongoing conflict and recently rebuked advisers suggesting compromise.
Russia has seized Kostiantynivka, a key town in Ukraine's "fortress belt," while approximately two million soldiers have been killed, wounded, or gone missing since the 2022 invasion, with 1.4 million of them Russian.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Russia remains ready for peace but has "enough capability to act independently and continue the special military operation," while sources report a "high probability" of escalation in coming months.
Former Russian defence ministry official Andrei Ilnitsky warned that escalation could involve destroying 30 major industrial sites in Ukraine or striking NATO bases in the Baltic states and Romania, signaling potential conflict expansion beyond current front lines.
