Police: Suspect Targeted Man in Random Attack because He 'Looked Like He Was From the 1960s'

Police say the victim suffered a deep facial and neck cut and the suspect admitted he entered the store intending to kill someone.

  • Punta Gorda police arrested 47-year-old Ramsey Thomas Lyons on Saturday evening after he attacked a 70-year-old man with a box cutter at a Publix on Tamiami Trail. Responding officers found Lyons standing near the store entrance with his hands on his head.
  • Lyons told investigators he entered the store with the "intent to murder someone" due to an "undiagnosed mental illness" and a "dislike for the 1960s era." He targeted the victim because he "looked like he was from the 1960s."
  • The victim suffered a 4 to 6-inch laceration extending from his left cheek through his jawline to his neck. Lyons admitted he dropped the weapon after the assault so arriving officers "wouldn't be scared" and use force.
  • Lyons faces a charge of aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and remains held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail. His custody status reflects the severity of the alleged offense.
  • His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 16. Kim Black, who works at a nearby business, stated, "It's very scary that someone can run around like that with a knife and just randomly pick a stranger.
