Puffin Rescued 110 Miles Inland Makes Wild Return After RSPCA Rehab
HEREFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND, JUL 17 – Oona the puffin was one of only six treated by the RSPCA team and weighed half the normal adult weight when found 110 miles inland in June 2025.
- The RSPCA team released Oona the puffin at Martin's Haven beach in Pembrokeshire, after her rescue from 110 miles inland, demonstrating successful rehabilitation.
- Discovered in June, Oona the puffin was found 110 miles inland from her coastal habitat, likely lost or disoriented, highlighting her unusual inland presence.
- After initial care, Oona was transferred to RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton, early July, where she received specialist wash, recovery pool therapy, and fish meals.
- Wildlife Supervisor Ryan Walker said `Finding a puffin that far inland is extraordinary`, while veterinarian Elliot Goodwin saw her bobbing happily in the water.
- These rare rescues underscore that only six puffins in ten years have been treated, highlighting their conservation importance, with puffins listed as a red status species and Skomer Island hosting Britain’s largest colony.
