Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands watch as Tropical Storm Erin heads westward
Tropical Storm Erin is forecast to become a major hurricane by early Sunday near Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with sustained winds expected to exceed 115 mph, forecasters said.
- On Tuesday, Tropical Storm Erin was in the eastern Atlantic with 45 mph winds and moving west at 23 mph, about 2,800 miles from the U.S. East Coast.
- Forecasters said gradual strengthening begins Wednesday, with Erin expected to become a hurricane by Thursday and a major Category 3 with at least 115 mph winds by early Sunday near Puerto Rico.
- Erin could become a hurricane by late Thursday, when it's predicted to sweep north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, Adam Berg said, 'I know when you look at this track, you're thinking, 'Oh, it looks like it's headed straight for us here,'"
- Bringing tropical-storm-force winds to Puerto Rico as early as 8 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service in Jacksonville said, 'swells from distant Erin will increase the rip current risk beginning Sunday at area beaches.'
- Next week, forecasters note, even greater uncertainty exists about impacts to the east coast of the United States and Bermuda, with a major hurricane potentially raising rip current and rough sea risks.
