UK Publisher Drops Books by David Walliams
The publisher is phasing out 23 children’s books and withdrawing digital editions after an internal inquiry into conduct concerns, according to trade reports.
- On Friday, publisher HarperCollins UK confirmed it will no longer publish the back catalogue of British children's author David Walliams, with remaining stock being phased out of bookshops and online platforms.
- The withdrawal follows an internal inquiry HarperCollins launched last year after a junior employee lodged a complaint about Walliams's conduct; during the probe, one employee agreed to a financial settlement and staff were advised not to visit his home.
- Since 2008, Walliams has published 23 children's books with HarperCollins that have collectively sold over 60 million copies worldwide and generated six television adaptations; titles including Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny and Ratburger have disappeared from the publisher's website.
- Walliams's agent stated the author "strongly denies" behaving inappropriately and claimed he was never informed of allegations or given an opportunity to answer questions during the investigation.
- Walliams previously exited Britain's Got Talent in 2022 after apologizing for "disrespectful comments" about contestants, while his BBC sketch series Little Britain faced criticism for racist and transphobic content that Ofcom described as explicitly racist in 2023.
