Public service cuts putting Canadians at risk from climate disasters: union
A federal union argues that cuts to public services are increasing risks for Canadians from climate disasters.
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is holding a rally to denounce cuts at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Natural Resources Canada.
Employees affected by the cuts work on flood forecasting, emergency mapping, wildfire monitoring, and forest threat studies.
Between March 2025 and March 2026, staff numbers dropped by 418 at Natural Resources Canada, 583 at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and 593 at Environment and Climate Change Canada.
