Quebec psychiatrists group supports bill on forced hospitalizations for mentally ill
The Association des Psychiatrists du Québec supports a bill to ease forced hospitalization for people in mental health crises by lowering the legal threshold for intervention from 'grave and immediate danger' to a broader 'danger' criterion.
Current law allows forced treatment only if a person poses a 'grave and immediate danger' to themselves or others.
Claire Gamache, president of the association, said early and compassionate intervention is important because many mentally ill people are unaware of their condition and such intervention helps patients accept treatment.
Health Minister Sonia Bélanger introduced the bill in March and aims for it to be adopted by the end of the legislative session in June.
The Association des médecins psychiatrists du Québec (AMPQ) voted in favour of Bill 23 which aims to ease the criteria for forcibly hospitalizing a person in crisis
