Province readies wildfire damaged Shuswap park for Salute to the Sockeye

The $2.1 million project restores access to the Viewing Platform Trail and other routes before the Salute to the Sockeye festival, officials said.

  • The Ministry of Environment and Parks announced Thursday, May 21, that infrastructure repairs are complete at the provincial North Shuswap park, "marking a significant step in restoring areas that were heavily damaged" by the Bush Creek East wildfire.
  • Supported by the Government of Canada's Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements, the $2.1 million project addresses extensive damage from an August 2023 wildfire that burned through most of the park.
  • Crews replaced two small pedestrian bridges and repaired a large pedestrian bridge along the Island Loop Trail, restoring access to the Viewing Platform Trail and Plaque Channel Trail.
  • These improvements restore public access for the Salute to the Sockeye festival, organized by the Adams River Salmon Society, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors every four years.
  • Expected to begin later this year, the second phase will focus on hazardous trees along the Wade Road and Flume trails, though some areas remain closed due to unstable slopes and fire damage.
