Protests over death of man pinned down on Dublin street

Gardaí have recovered CCTV and social media footage and are seeking witnesses as a post-mortem has been completed, officials said.

  • On Friday, Congolese-born Yves Sakila died after security personnel restrained him outside Arnotts department store in Dublin during an alleged shoplifting incident. Gardai are investigating the death and have appealed for witnesses.
  • A widely shared video shows Sakila pinned to the ground by five men for almost five minutes as bystanders watched. Lawmakers in parliament described the footage as "distressing" and "disturbing," sparking public concern.
  • The Serious Crime Unit at Store Street established an incident room to investigate. Fiosru, the office of the Garda Ombudsman, is examining the case while Gardai stated they are "continuing to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding" the death.
  • Hundreds of people protested outside Leinster House on Thursday, chanting "no cover up, no delay" and "justice for Yves, dignity for all." Protesters demanded a "full, transparent, and independent investigation" into the death.
  • The death revives memories of George Floyd, the 2020 United States incident that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement. Arnotts said it was "deeply saddened" by the death and is co-operating with police.
