Failed asylum seeker who left fake dynamite outside MI5 headquarters jailed

Pereira was jailed for 2 years and 6 months after CCTV showed him leaving a hoax explosive at MI5 headquarters, police said.

  • On Friday, Judge Mark Lucraft jailed Julian Valente Pereira, a 33-year-old Brazilian national, for two and a half years for planting a fake stick of dynamite outside MI5 headquarters at Thames House on New Year's Day.
  • Pereira, a failed asylum seeker, acted after his deportation notice arrived following his rejected asylum bid; Prosecutor Shannon Revel stated he sought "maximum attention" for his grievances against the Home Office.
  • CCTV footage captured Pereira leaving the device, which police initially feared was a "genuine explosive," and Lucraft noted the hoax "diverted them from other things" during the New Year's Day parade.
  • During sentencing at the Old Bailey, Judge Lucraft observed the defendant "may well" be deported from Britain, having arrived in 2018 with permission to work before his asylum claim failed.
  • Pereira, living in Uxbridge, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia; Lucraft acknowledged the defendant demonstrated remorse and is of good character despite the offense.
