Ten year study confirms effectiveness of two-week radiotherapy for prostate cancer
- Swedish researchers presented at ESTRO 2025 that a two-and-a-half-week radiotherapy regime treats localized prostate cancer as effectively as the traditional eight-week schedule.
- The research, prompted by the challenges posed by lengthy radiotherapy regimens on patients and healthcare systems, included a large Phase III trial involving 1,200 participants diagnosed with localized prostate cancer at intermediate to high risk.
- After ten years, the short-course treatment achieved 72% failure-free survival and 81% overall survival, comparable to 65% and 79%, respectively, for the standard course, with similar safety and side effect profiles.
- Trial leaders Nilsson and Gunnlaugsson reported that administering a reduced number of larger radiation doses within a condensed treatment schedule is just as effective as the conventional method, while also offering patients greater convenience and the possibility of reduced healthcare expenses.
- These results support wider adoption of short-course radiotherapy, improving patient convenience and healthcare efficiency without sacrificing long-term cancer control or safety.
