Proposed ICE detention center in Merrimack, New Hampshire faces opposition
- On Thursday, Department of Homeland Security documents show DHS and ICE plan to convert the 324,000-square-foot warehouse at 50 Robert Milligan Parkway into a detention site with 400 to 600 beds, tied to a new detention model by the end of Fiscal Year 2026.
- DHS emailed the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources on Jan. 9 to initiate consultation and proposed site renovations, with Liz Schneible confirming receipt on Jan. 12 and the ACLU-NH filing a right-to-know request Jan. 26.
- An economic analysis estimates $158 million to retrofit the site and $146 million to operate it in the first three years, with DHS projecting 1,252 jobs, $151.3 million GDP, and $31.2 million tax revenue.
- At a Senate hearing, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said `DHS has worked with Governor Kelly Ayotte, has spoke to the governor about economic impact`, a claim Ayotte disputes, while she states DHS only shared records after inquiry and she immediately shared them with Merrimack officials.
- Local leaders warn a Merrimack warehouse could strain emergency services in the town of about 30,000 and the plan is part of a federal master plan expanding ICE capacity toward 92,600 beds.
