The European Union (EU) has decided to propose listing all eel species, including the edible Japanese eel, in the Washington Convention to regulate international trade, as they are at risk of extinction. Japan has protested, saying that the resources are sufficient. In cooperation with China and South Korea, which jointly manage the resources, Japan is working to reject the proposal.
