The EU wants to protect farmers and consumers, and therefore bans terms for products that are related to meat but are not made up of meat, which is what caterers who have alternative dishes on the menu say, and that is what they propose.

The move sparked outrage after MEPs approved a proposal to ban the use of "steaks", "sausages", "hamburgers", "burgers" and other terms for plant-based products that do not contain meat. More than 400 organisations are appealing to European institutions to drop the proposed ban on the use of 29 meat-related terms for plant-based products.
