Pro-government forces say they retake airport in Ethiopia's Tigray region
Government forces say they have regained the airport after rebel advances disrupted flights and cut communications, with more than 700 wounded treated across Tigray, MSF said.
- On Saturday, Ethiopian federal forces and allied Tigray Peace Forces recaptured Alula Aba Nega Airport, located 10km from Mekelle, according to militia statements and multiple sources.
- The TPLF launched an offensive last month, seizing three regional airfields while engaging the Ethiopian National Defence Force across Tigray, prompting the current counteroffensive.
- Though the Tigray Peace Forces claimed on Friday they were "currently clearing the city of Mekelle," independent verification remains impossible due to severe media restrictions and communications blackouts.
- Since September 26, 2026, ticket offices have closed and all flights to Tigray were canceled, while residents express concerns about potential looting and absent security forces.
- TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael said on Thursday that "the war is regional and it is a war to control the Red Sea," while Eritrea denied involvement in the conflict.

Ethiopian forces reportedly retake Mekelle airport after rebels seized three northern air gateways
Ethiopian federal forces have reportedly regained control of Mekelle’s airport, marking a reversal at an aviation gateway caught in renewed fighting in the country’s northern Tigray region.
The Ethiopian Federal Army entered today in Mekele, the regional capital of Tigray located 150 kilometres from the Eritrean border. Already yesterday, Tigray troops allied with the government had taken over the city's airport, in the hands of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebels since 23 September. It is a major take for the army, which in recent days has gained ground in Tigray, but also more east, in Afar.
