Pro-data center industry group behind ad campaign in Oregon, six other states
The group says the ads will explain data centers and their energy use as Oregon lawmakers pause a key tax break.
- Oregon Connects, a group registered as a social welfare organization on March 4, is running 30-second ad campaigns in Oregon and at least six other states to promote data center benefits.
- The organization registered the same day the Oregon House passed a bill including a one-year moratorium on Standard Enterprise Zone tax abatements, a measure sponsored by Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek.
- While data centers save $85 million annually in Oregon property taxes, the Hillsboro City Council unanimously agreed on Monday to a 120-day moratorium on new data center and battery energy storage system approvals.
- The Data Center Coalition, representing Microsoft, Google and other tech companies, recently joined a lawsuit against Hillsboro challenging tax breaks that can offer 25 years of property tax waivers.
- Similar to North Carolina Connects, which spent nearly $370,000 on ads across 189 channels in the past month, the Oregon campaign uses B-roll of families and workers to explain the industry's role in the 21st-century economy.
