Dash Cams to Be Mandatory for Commercial Vehicles in B.C.
The law requires large trucks to carry dashcams with 72-hour recording, night vision and 1080p video after unanimous legislative approval.
- On Monday, B.C. Conservative MLA Ward Stamer's private-members bill passed unanimously through the legislature, mandating dash cameras on all commercial vehicles travelling B.C. highways.
- Stamer's push began three years ago when he was mayor of Barriere following fatal crashes on Highway 5, driven by families in his Kamloops-North Thompson constituency who lost loved ones in preventable collisions.
- Under the legislation, dashcams must retain at least 72 hours of recording with night vision and 1080p resolution, applying only to vehicles over 11,793 kilograms; the B.C. Trucking Association endorsed the bill, noting about 75 per cent of commercial vehicle collisions aren't the truck driver's fault.
- Commercial trucks will soon require dashcams, with implementation beginning six months after royal assent; Stamer argues the cameras hold drivers accountable and prevent evidence from being 'buried in a yearlong investigation.'
- B.C. Trucking Association president Dave Earle cautioned that provincial-only rules risk creating interprovincial trade barriers unless Transport Canada implements federal standards, positioning B.C. as leading the country on commercial vehicle safety.
