Pritzker issues disaster proclamation for Illinois counties ravaged by severe storms
The proclamation frees state resources and seeks federal aid, with rural communities eligible for up to $250,000 in disaster grants, officials said.
On Tuesday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker issued a state disaster proclamation for 11 counties ravaged by severe spring and summer weather, accelerating recovery efforts across Coles, Cook, Effingham, Jefferson, Kankakee, LaSalle, McLean, Stephenson, Warren, Winnebago and Woodford counties.
Illinois has led the nation in tornado activity this year, with approximately 173 tornadoes confirmed statewide, covering a historic stretch from March tornadoes in Kankakee County to recent June storms in Jefferson County.
The proclamation unlocks state resources and provides a pathway for local governments to seek assistance, including up to $250,000 through the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Response program for debris removal, cleanup and infrastructure repairs.
Governor Pritzker is scheduled to visit Effingham and Jefferson counties on Wednesday, July 1, to view storm damage and meet with local officials, following the June 21 severe weather that killed two people and injured five in Jefferson County.
Pritzker criticized the Trump administration for raising support thresholds and seemingly denying funding for political reasons, while a Politico analysis found Democrat-led states saw just 23% of disaster requests granted compared to 89% for Republican counterparts.
