'Purple Rain' Musical to Open on Broadway in Spring 2027
The production will feature more than 20 Prince songs and creative team members say it aims to honor his legacy for new audiences.
- On Monday, producer Orin Wolf announced the stage adaptation of Purple Rain will debut at Broadway's Majestic Theatre in 2027, with previews beginning March 12 ahead of an April 12 opening.
- Based on the 1984 film starring Prince, the musical originally premiered in the fall of 2025 at the historic State Theatre in Minneapolis, where it first adapted the story for the stage.
- Broadway audiences will see a substantially reworked production as Saheem Ali directs with a book by Peter Duchan, while music supervisor Jason Michael Webb and choreographer Ebony Williams remain with the production.
- Featuring over 20 of Prince's iconic hits including "When Doves Cry," the musical follows "The Kid," a performer struggling with his turbulent past and rivalries while seeking stardom.
- Tickets for the Broadway run go on sale this September, capitalizing on the original film's legacy of more than $70 million in worldwide box office revenue.
