Federal Government Launches New National AI Council
The council will advise on AI deployment, risk management and adoption as Canada pursues its AI for All strategy.
- On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney launched the National Council, a 13-member advisory body tasked with providing independent, practical expert advice on Canada's AI transformation and strategy evolution.
- The Council will guide the national AI strategy released in June, which aims to accelerate AI adoption, foster national champions, and build sovereign AI infrastructure to support Canada's prosperity and competitiveness.
- Notable tech leaders appointed include "AI godfather" Yoshua Bengio, former Nvidia lab leader Sanja Fidler, Creative Destruction Lab co-founder Ajay Agrawal, Radical Ventures co-founder Jordan Jacobs, Mila CEO Valérie Pisano, and Canadian Cloudflare co-founder Michelle Zatlyn.
- Other members include CPP Investments CEO John Graham, Senator Thomas Pitfield, and Patrick Pichette, who recently became CEO of the Government's new Digital Transformation Agency.
- In their recommendations, Agrawal suggested proposing moonshot AI projects to drive infrastructure creation, while Pichette advised Canada to become the world's lowest-cost safe data centre infrastructure provider.
