Preston Manning co-chairing virtual educational assembly ahead of Alberta referendum
Manning and Gordon Campbell will lead two nonpartisan sessions that aim to turn Alberta’s referendum debate into recommendations for western legislatures.
- Former Reform Party leader Preston Manning and Premier Gordon Campbell will co-chair a two-day virtual assembly in Calgary on Sept. 19 and 20, addressing western grievances ahead of Alberta's Oct. 19 referendum.
- Alberta's Oct. 19 referendum will ask voters to consider 10 questions, including whether the province should remain in Canada or initiate a binding separation process.
- Approximately 30 delegates from Alberta and 20-24 from Western Canada, alongside constitutional lawyers and policy experts, will participate in the livestreamed sessions to examine Canadian federalism issues.
- Manning said the forum serves as a democratic exercise, stating, "This is an important referendum, and it's important that people, no matter what their views are, that they get out and vote on it."
- Following the Oct. 19 vote, organizers plan to create recommendations for policymakers across Western Canada, addressing what they describe as dissatisfactions with Canadian federalism's functioning.
