Dedication Ceremony for Obama Presidential Library Set for June
The $850 million Obama Presidential Center offers community spaces and a museum, opening on Juneteenth to symbolize hope and civic engagement, officials said.
- On Saturday, the Obama Foundation announced the Obama Presidential Center will open to the public on June 19, with a dedication ceremony hosted by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama on June 18.
- Barack Obama first unveiled the plan in 2015 for an $800 million center with a 225-foot museum tower in Jackson Park, but federal reviewers and lawsuits delayed the opening from 2021 to summer of 2026 as it expanded to an $850 million campus.
- Visitors will find the museum, Chicago Public Library branch, forum building with auditorium and media suite, and a 45,000-square-foot athletic center, with 'You are America' inscribed on the facade.
- The Obama Foundation announced the dedication ceremony will be livestreamed on June 18, with public celebrations on June 20 and 21, and museum tickets go on sale in May.
- The Obama Foundation describes the center as a 'living destination' for civic engagement, opening on June 19 with concerns over gentrification, a $40 million lawsuit, and Airbnb promotion.
