President Murmu approves increasing Supreme Court Judge strength from 34 to 38
The move adds four judges to the Supreme Court and aims to ease nearly 95,000 pending cases, legal experts said.
On Sunday, President Draupadi Murmu approved increasing Supreme Court judge strength from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice, announced Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet approved the proposal on May 5, initiating the Amendment Ordinance, 2026 to amend the 'Supreme Court Act, 1956.'
With nearly 95,000 pending cases, Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh noted long-standing demand for more judges, while Advocate Sumit Gehlot cautioned that structural reforms are equally necessary.
Singh highlighted that the Court could accommodate 38 judges, with a new building expected to become operational by year-end to support potential future requirements of around 50 judges.
Former Union Law Secretary P.K. Malhotra suggested establishing regional Courts of Appeal to allow the Supreme Court to focus on constitutional matters, noting upcoming 2026 retirements could impact case pendency.
