South Korea’s president to attend NATO summit in Ankara and visit Mongolia
Lee will seek defense industry cooperation with NATO members and sign multiple memorandums of understanding during a three-day state visit to Mongolia.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will embark on a five-day overseas trip next week, attending the NATO summit in Turkey from July 7 to 8 followed by a state visit to Mongolia from July 9 to 11.
National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac stated the trip aims to expand defense industry cooperation, noting that 32 NATO allies account for 55 percent of global defense spending and represent the world's largest procurement market.
In Ankara, Lee will hold his first in-person meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and join a group summit with Indo-Pacific partners, including Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Moving to Ulaanbaatar, Lee will meet Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa to sign agreements and declare a "golden era of South Korea-Mongolia relations," outlining a long-term vision for bilateral ties.
As the first Korean president to attend Mongolia's Naadam Festival as guest of honor, Lee will seek closer cooperation on Korean Peninsula stability through initiatives like the annual Ulaanbaatar Dialogue.
For the first time, South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung personally travels to a NATO summit where he wants to expand cooperation in the armaments industry.
