Carroll says Labor risks a 29-day leadership ballot that could consume campaign time as polling shows 70% of voters dissatisfied with Allan.
- On Tuesday, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan faces a leadership spill motion at a Labor caucus meeting after Deputy Premier Ben Carroll formally challenged her position, claiming colleagues asked him to stand.
- Just six weeks ago, Carroll publicly denied seeking the leadership while standing beside Allan; however, deteriorating Newspoll figures showing Labor trailing the coalition 52 per cent to 48 per cent have fueled renewed party instability.
- Carroll wrote that the stakes at the upcoming election are "simply too high" to maintain the current leadership, while Allan defiantly declared her intention to nominate for the leadership if an election is required.
- If the spill succeeds, Victorian Labor faces a minimum 29-day process to elect a new leader, a delay psephologist Kevin Bonham warned provides "ammunition for opposition parties" ahead of November's state election.
- Pollster Tony Barry noted a Labor defeat is "absolutely plausible" with Victorian Opposition Leader Jess Wilson preferred as premier, complicating the party's attempt to secure a fourth successive term in government.
