Preliminary UN probe blames Israel and likely Hezbollah for peacekeeper deaths
The U.N. said one peacekeeper was hit by Israeli tank fire and two were killed by an IED most likely planted by Hezbollah.
- On Tuesday, the United Nations released preliminary findings stating three Indonesian peacekeepers were likely killed in Lebanon last month by Israeli tank fire in one incident and a Hezbollah improvised explosive device in another.
- The first incident involved a 120 mm tank round fired by an Israel Defense Forces Merkava tank from the east, while an IED most likely placed by Hezbollah destroyed a vehicle the following day.
- UNIFIL had communicated its position to the Israeli military twice before the incidents; UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric called the deaths "unacceptable," noting they could amount to war crimes under international law.
- The United Nations has requested that national authorities investigate and prosecute the cases to bring perpetrators to justice, with Dujarric telling reporters, "These are preliminary findings, based on initial physical evidence."
- Tensions persist as the Israeli military blocked a UNIFIL logistics convoy and briefly detained a peacekeeper on Tuesday, an action Kandice Ardiel called a "blatant violation of international law.
