Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party leads in provisional election results
PAM won 97 seats as turnout fell to 38%, and the next government will face pressure over jobs, healthcare and education.
- Morocco's Authenticity and Modernity Party won the most seats in Wednesday's parliamentary election, securing 97 of 395 seats in the House of Representatives, according to provisional results announced by the Interior Ministry on Thursday.
- The governing National Rally of Independents dropped to 66 seats from 102, while the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party surged to 54 seats compared to just 13 in 2021.
- Voter turnout reached 38%, the lowest level since 2007, as citizens expressed frustration with the political class. Fifty-year-old Majda Bakatir told AFP, "We want our country to move forward, but politicians do not seem to care about our problems regarding healthcare, education, and purchasing power."
- King Mohammed VI must appoint a prime minister from the winning party to lead the next government, which will oversee preparations for Morocco's co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup.
