Pregnant Ambo Allegedly Bashed by Patient
The paramedic has taken herself off the road as unions warn rising assaults on ambulance crews could force staff to withdraw care.
On Monday, a 12-week pregnant paramedic was punched in the head and stomach by a patient she had just revived from a drug overdose at The Austin Hospital in Melbourne, forcing her to leave frontline duties.
Ambulance Victoria CEO Jordan Emery condemned the attack, describing the rising violence against first responders as an "appalling trend," noting more than 1,000 hazardous incidents were reported in the state last year.
Over the last week, paramedics have faced multiple assaults, including being bitten, shoved, and threatened with scissors, following a separate stabbing of a paramedic in Reservoir late last month.
Victorian Ambulance Union secretary Danny Hill said the paramedic made the difficult decision to leave frontline work for her safety, and the union supports staff withdrawing care if they face violence or danger.
Officials are currently reviewing laws to better protect emergency service workers, with Health Minister Harriet Shing calling the attacks "disgraceful" while promising to identify safeguards with the union.
