CNA Explains: Is It Safe to Swim at Sentosa, After Water Quality Issues at World Aquatics Championships?
SINGAPORE, JUL 16 – Open water swimming events resumed after E. coli levels improved to meet World Aquatics standards, following two postponements that prioritized athlete safety, organizers said.
- The swimming competitions held in open water at the Singapore-hosted aquatic championships on July 16 experienced two delays due to elevated E. coli bacteria levels near Sentosa Island before the races finally commenced.
- The postponements followed water-quality tests showing E. coli exceeding acceptable thresholds, with no confirmed source of contamination identified.
- Officials noted E. coli can originate from birds, swimmers, wastewater leaks, or boats improperly disposing waste, and athletes risk swallowing more contaminated water during strenuous exercise.
- Water-Quality samples on July 15 and Tuesday afternoon showed significant improvement, with E. coli levels falling between good and excellent ranges set by World Aquatics regulations.
- NEA will continue monitoring E. coli and Enterococcus levels at Sentosa, while swimming at other regional beaches remains safe as per current advisories and grading exercises.
