Posthumous Jimmy Buffett Album Planned, Will Include Never-Released Material
Mac McAnally says the finished record pulls from rare tracks tied to films, TV and stage work, with one song dating to 2003.
Mac McAnally and Michael Utley, longtime Coral Reefer Band members, completed a posthumous Jimmy Buffett album featuring unreleased tracks that McAnally told Billboard are 'for the most part, things that have never been out.'
Following their work on Buffett's final album Equal Strain on All Parts released in November 2023, two months after his September 1, 2023 death, McAnally and Utley continued mining archival material for the new project.
Songs span from 2003 to roughly four years ago, including an outtake from the 2017 Escape to Margaritaville stage musical and a piece from Buffett's recurring character Frank Bama on CBS Hawaii Five-O, with none previously appearing on a Buffett album.
The Coral Reefers debuted one track, 'Workin' n' Playin,' this summer as a band-and-Buffett duet, with McAnally praising the finished album as 'really good' and 'a good hodgepodge' after three months of work.
With no release date or title announced, the album stands as part of Buffett's expanding legacy following his 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, as the Coral Reefers conclude their summer tour in Boston through August 8.
