King as Upset About Horizon Scandal as We Are, Says ‘Oldest’ Victim, Aged 93
Betty Brown says the monarch is as upset as victims after the Horizon scandal left her waiting for compensation despite a settled redress claim.
- On Tuesday, 93-year-old Betty Brown received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire at Windsor Castle from the King, joining 68 other honourees including Sir Idris Elba and ice skating champions Dame Jayne Torvill and Sir Christopher Dean.
- Brown ran the Annfield Plain Post Office with her late husband Oswall between 1985 and 2003, losing around £100,000 to cover non-existent shortfalls created by the Japanese firm Fujitsu's Horizon accounting system.
- The Horizon scandal saw around 1,000 people wrongly prosecuted between 1999 and 2015; Brown, an original participant in the group legal action led by Sir Alan Bates, continues to campaign for subpostmasters.
- After meeting the King, Brown urged Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to resolve the scandal quickly, telling him, "There is no price on justice," and warning against waiting for victims to die.
- Despite reaching a settlement last year through the Government's redress scheme, Brown has yet to receive a "penny"; she rejected Fujitsu's offer of therapy, demanding financial support for victims' children instead.
