Real wages of Portuguese teachers entering the career have decreased in the last ten years, although they continue to be above the average value of other professionals with higher qualifications. The percentage of contracts to term is also the highest. Attracting and maintaining good teachers in the education systems are increasing challenges, recalls the OECD in the last edition of the report "Education at a Glance 2025".
OECD study indicates that the satisfaction of Portuguese teachers with working conditions and wages is low compared to other countries. However, ordered ones exceed those of other graduates.
Only 13.4% of Portuguese teachers are satisfied with the salary, the lowest value of the OECD. Working conditions also leave Portugal close to the end of the table and teachers at the beginning of their careers have lost 10% of their income in a decade.
Bureaucracy and indiscipline are among the main sources of stress of Portuguese teachers, who also feel little recognized: only 9% say that the profession is valued by society.
