The program, announced this Monday, September 21, is the National Strategy for the Management of the Invasive Macroalga, approved in July 2025, and results from the work of an interinstitutional group coordinated by the Portuguese Environment Agency, which brought together public administration agencies, local authorities, scientific institutions and other entities.

Portugal wants to mitigate invasive algae on the coast
The Government has approved measures to limit the spread of the invasive macroalga already present in several locations along the Portuguese coast and to minimise impacts where it has already established itself, it was announced.
Satellite surveillance, sensors and new forms of removal integrate plane by 2030. Erasing algae is virtually impossible, admits the ministry.
