Portugal Turned Right: Left Suffered Historical Defeat

The right-wing party has won three-quarters of the vote in Portugal's parliamentary election. The vote, sparked by a corruption scandal, could pave the way for constitutional changes and put the spotlight on several of the country's problems.

Last Sunday, the 18th, Portugal's second legislative elections took place in just over a year, giving rise to the most right-wing parliament since the conquest of democracy. Although it does not seem that the early repetition of elections will bring stable scenarios of governability to the crisis that, in November 2023, took António Costa and his government by storm, one of the few in which the socialists still governed with an absolute majority.
