Washington claims to comply with agreements on its military presence in Portugal, while defending the purchase of F-35 fighters to renew fleet. The Portuguese government still evaluates options to replace its F-16, considering national interest as a priority in the final decision.

On the use of the Base das Lajes, in the Azores, Rubio guaranteed that it follows "the protocols" and praised Portugal as "a great ally".
