Port star Butters learns AFL tribunal fate
Match review officer Michael Christian ruled the contact negligible, and Butters avoided a suspension that would have hurt his Brownlow Medal chances.
Match Review Officer Michael Christian cleared Port Adelaide star Zak Butters of wrongdoing following his late bump on Western Bulldogs midfielder Joel Freijah during Friday night's match at Adelaide Oval.
Butters elected to bump Freijah after the latter disposed of the ball, sparking immediate fury on the pitch as several Western Bulldogs stars rushed the Port Adelaide midfielder.
Christian determined that any high contact made during the incident was "negligible," concluding Butters' actions did not constitute a reportable offence after reviewing available evidence.
The decision allows Butters to avoid an AFL suspension, keeping him in Brownlow Medal contention, while Carlton ace Sam Walsh was penalised $1500 for striking Brisbane Lions player Levi Ashcroft.
This clearance follows a separate tribunal ordeal regarding an alleged comment toward umpire Nick Foot, which Butters successfully appealed after proving an error of law involving jury member Jason Johnson.
