Popular Prime Video TV Show Introduces Controversial AI Feature, Other Shows Will Use It Too
- Prime Video launched an AI-powered lip-sync feature on Wednesday for its German-language romance series Maxton Hall, synchronizing actors' mouth movements with human-dubbed audio across seasons 1 and 2 globally.
- Raf Soltanovich, VP of technology at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the goal is creating "a more seamless and immersive way for customers to enjoy global content." Prime Video tested AI-aided dubbing across 12 movies and shows last year.
- The platform uses AI and VFX technologies with "creative oversight" to align speech and preserve artistic vision. Season 3, based on the 2018 novel Save Me by Mona Kasten, will include the feature when it premieres Dec 9.
- Amazon joins competitors Meta and YouTube, who recently launched similar AI-powered auto-dubbing features. Netflix established this localization template years ago with international hits like Squid Game and Money Heist.
- Prime Video plans to expand this technology to "additional titles" in the future as the company leverages its tech resources to ramp up non-U.S. offerings and close gaps with global competitors.
