- Pope Leo XIV maintains deep ties to Peru, where he lived for more than two decades during three different stages of his pastoral ministry and became a naturalized citizen in 2015, serving as bishop in the Diocese of Chiclayo until 2023.
- Peru launched an official religious and tourism circuit, 'Paths of Pope Leo XIV,' in May 2025, which links more than 35 landmarks including the Cathedral of St. Mary and the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum across several cities.
- Balcázar announced the visit after a two-hour private audience at the Vatican, where they discussed migration, human rights, and illegal mining, with the pope expressing hope that 'Peruvians can come together' and politicians will have plans for the future.
- The final itinerary remains under discussion, and organizers have not ruled out potential visits to Puno and Iquitos as they finalize the schedule for the pontiff's November return to the country.
