Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed with Cancer, Undergoes Successful Lung Surgery
Pope Leo XIV underwent successful 90-minute surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after being diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, returning to his room on the 10th floor.
During Sunday prayers at St Peter's Square, the Pope revealed, "Recently, during some medical tests, doctors discovered a localised nodule in my lung."
Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer, and while around 95% of lung nodules are benign, this specific growth required surgical intervention.
This past week, Pope Leo declared capital punishment "inadmissible" following plans for the United States to livestream an execution, affirming his moral stance.
In the United States, lung nodules are detected in 31% of chest CT scans, and the National Lung Cancer Screening program aims to improve early detection.
