Pope Leo Blesses Sagrada Familia's Tower of Jesus, Says Beauty Can Lead People to God
- On Wednesday, June 10, Pope Leo XIV blessed the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ at Barcelona's Sagrada Familia, inaugurating the crowning spire that makes the basilica the world's tallest Catholic church.
- The papal Mass coincided with the 100th anniversary of Antoni's death; the visionary architect devoted 43 years to the basilica's construction before his death in 1926.
- An estimated 9,000 people attended the Mass inside the basilica while 120,000 worshipped outside; a 500-member choir sang hymns as the tower's crown featured a four-armed cross roughly 17 meters tall.
- Pope Leo XIV urged followers to lift their gaze to Christ "who alone reveals to us the truth about God and the truth about ourselves." He emphasized believers cannot promote war or abandon those who suffer.
- Much more than a monument, the basilica remains a work in progress with completion projected for 2036. The project comprises 18 towers and three facades, continuing as a symbol of the Christian journey.
