Pope Leo Names Archbishop Viola New Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica
Viola will oversee daily basilica operations and liturgies, while Bishop Aurelio García Macías takes over the Vatican’s worship office.
- On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV appointed Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola as the new Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica and Vicar General of His Holiness for Vatican City.
- The 61-year-old Franciscan succeeds Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, whom Pope Leo named archbishop of the central Italian Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto last week. Viola previously served as Secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
- Before his time in the Roman Curia, the Italian prelate served as bishop of the northern Italian Diocese of Tortona from 2014 to 2021. He holds a doctorate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Sant'Anselmo in Rome.
- Pope Leo also appointed Spanish Bishop Aurelio García Macías to succeed Viola as the new secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. García Macías has worked in the dicastery since 2015 and as undersecretary since 2021.
- As archpriest, Viola will lead the Fabric of St. Peter, the Vatican office responsible for maintaining the basilica complex. According to the apostolic constitution "Praedicate Evangelium," this includes managing the building's "conservation and decorum" and overseeing internal discipline.
