Iowa Primary Election: What to Know Before Heading to the Polls on June 2
Iowans are choosing party nominees for governor, Congress and the Legislature, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and absentee ballots due by 8 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Iowans voted in the state's primary election to determine which candidates will appear on the ballot for the November general election.
Senator Joni Ernst announced last year that she would retire rather than seek a third term, giving Democrats an opening to regain control of the Senate.
The high-stakes Democratic Senate primary features State Representative Josh Turek and State Senator Zach Wahls, while former Iowa State Senator Jim Carlin and Representative Ashley Hinson compete for the Republican nomination.
Beyond the Senate race, voters decided contests for governor, where Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand ran unopposed, and all four U.S. House seats across the Hawkeye State.
Winners from Tuesday's primary will advance to the general election scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026, where they will compete for final control of state and federal offices.
