- The Trump administration has already initiated similar oversight through the Student Tuition and Transparency System and Earnings Accountability rule announced June 29, requiring programs to demonstrate graduates earn more than typical high school diploma holders.
- Wayne Winegarden, a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute in Pasadena, Calif., warned against government interference, calling such efforts "punitive." He argued, "It's no place for the federal government to come in" and judge academic programs.
- Complicating efforts to tie loans to specific programs, about 75% of students change their major at least once before graduating, while the federal student loan portfolio has reached approximately $1.8 trillion.
