Police were young and outgunned: where was the back-up at Bondi?

Local Bondi police armed only with pistols confronted two gunmen with long-range weapons for six and a half minutes before tactical backup arrived, raising questions about armament policies.

On Sunday, it was general duties police – the kind that usually deal with motor vehicle accidents and retail theft – who found themselves responsible for stopping the deadliest attack Australia has witnessed in 30 years. Suddenly, they were facing two terrorists who were intent on mass fatalities and were skilled at using what appeared to be bolt-action, high-powered rifles.
