Police watchdog seeks witnesses after arrest and death of man in B.C. Interior
The watchdog says the man died in hospital six days after arrest, and investigators are asking witnesses to come forward.
- The Independent Investigations Office is seeking witnesses to the 2025 arrest of an Indigenous man near Kaleden in the South Okanagan, asking anyone with information to contact the Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.
- On June 21, 2025, the man was driving a red older model Jeep along Twin Lakes Road when he was involved in a rollover crash; he left the scene but was arrested after RCMP located him using a police service dog.
- Following his arrest, the man received medical assessment but died in the hospital on June 27, 2025, six days after the incident, according to a press release issued Monday by the IIO.
- The BC First Nations Justice Council brought the case to the attention of the IIO on April 20, 2026, prompting both organizations to begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
- As an independent civilian oversight agency, the IIO investigates incidents where police involvement leads to serious harm or death, determining whether officer actions caused injuries meeting the threshold defined by the Police Act.
