Cranbrook Man Dies in Police Custody, IIO Investigating
The watchdog is examining whether officer action or inaction contributed after the man was taken to hospital in critical condition and died two days later.
The Independent Investigations Office is investigating the death of a man who died in hospital on Tuesday, June 30, following an arrest by Cranbrook RCMP on Saturday, June 27.
Responding to reports of a man on a roof near Briar Avenue and 5th Street on Saturday, officers located the individual in possession of weapons before taking him into custody.
Police provided aid after noticing the man was "in medical distress" the following day; Fire members and paramedics transported him to a hospital in critical condition.
Pronounced dead on Tuesday, the man's death triggered an IIO investigation under the Police Act, which mandates probes into all police-involved incidents resulting in serious harm or death.
Investigators are asking any witnesses with information or video recordings to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 or submit details via the IIO website contact form.
