Police Disguised as World Cup Mascots Arrest Suspected Drug Dealer in Peru
Police said 2 undercover officers in mascot costumes helped seize 2,524 packets of cocaine base and a gun from the suspect.
On Thursday in Lima, Peru, two police officers disguised as World Cup mascots Clutch and Maple arrested suspected drug dealer Carlos Cabrera during the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.
Colonel Carlos Alc, head of the Green Squadron, said intelligence revealed Cabrera was a "diehard football fan" caught up in World Cup fever, prompting officers to don mascots without raising suspicion.
Police seized 2,524 packets of cocaine base and a gun during the operation, while the Green Squadron has previously disguised themselves as the Grinch, Freddy Krueger, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Santa Claus.
In Peru, micro-trafficking of drugs carries a prison sentence of three to seven years when suspects are found with five to 50 grams of cocaine base.
Clutch represents the United States as a bald eagle, while Maple symbolizes Canada as a moose, and Mexico is represented by a jaguar named Zayu.
The police in Peru have found a truly unique way to apprehend an alleged drug dealer. Two officers put on mascot costumes of the official 2026 World Cup mascots: Clutch the American eagle and Maple the Canadian moose.
