Ohio City Fires Police Officer Who Shot and Killed 15-Year-Old, Settles Lawsuit with Family
The city reached a $4.75 million settlement and said Fields was terminated after investigators found policy violations in the shooting response.
On Friday, the City of Akron fired Police Officer Davon Fields and reached a $4.75 million settlement in the death of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker, whom Fields fatally shot in November 2024.
Mayor Shammas Malik cited policy violations including delayed medical aid and body camera failures, stating Fields violated the city's medical aid policy by delaying aid for almost eight minutes.
Akron FOP Lodge #7 President Brian Lucey condemned the firing as "unjust," calling Fields a "political scapegoat" and vowing the union would "fight for Officer Fields" against the termination.
Democratic mayoral candidate Tara Mosley Weems questioned why it took over 600 days to fire Fields, while Akron City Councilman Eric Garrett called for necessary reforms addressing the city's mounting legal costs.
Chief of Public Safety Craig Morgan announced the city is implementing a "Critical Decision-Making Model" and establishing a Critical Incident Review Board to strengthen accountability in future use-of-force investigations.
